A hip injury forces Guga to undergo surgery to get a prosthesis and to stop playing for a while. Shortly after, he lets Larri go, but soon rehires him to put together a big farewell. In 1998 Guga returns to in 2008 to retire on the court that made him a legend.
In 2001, Guga returns to Roland Garros as number one, during the peak of Brazilian tennis. He reaches the final to face Alex Corretja, who enters the court ready to win. Despite the hardships of the match, Guga manages to defeat him. To celebrate conquering the tournament for a third time, he draws his famous heart on the court's ground, which will remain in the sport's history.
After winning Roland Garros, Guga and Larri Passos envision reaching number one. To do so, Guga must win the Masters Cup 1000 tournament in Lisbon. Despite losing to Agassi in the first game and with the help of his mother to get back on his feet, he perseveres. In the following games, he wins against Norman, Kafelnikov, Sampras and finally defeats Agassi, thus getting to the top.

He then defeats Ferrero in the semifinal and Norman in the final, becoming two-time champion.
