In 1998, Guga returns to Roland Garros and loses to Marat Safin in the second round. In 1999, he suffers a quarterfinal defeat to Andrei Medvedev. When he comes back in 2000, he finally wins quarterfinals, in which he beats Kafelnikov, who then gives him the nickname of the "Picasso" of tennis. He then defeats Ferrero in the semifinal and Norman in the final, becoming two-time champion.
